THE FIRST OF THEIR KIND.At the 2009 international Auto Shanghai motor show, BMW had big surprise up its sleeve. With the launch of the BMW X5 (E70), several new technologies were introduced into its range. The M-specific all-wheel drive xDrive and the turbocharged engine were features that no standard automobile had had before. The body shape of the X5 also represented completely new terrain for BMW M. In the summer of 2009, the world's first high-performance SAC was unveiled when the BMW X6 celebrated its premiere in Atlanta.
"The balance is simply perfect – the engineers at BMW have done great job."AutoBild, 2009
WHAT THE PRESS SAID.The first media test drive for the X5 and X6 was not conducted on the US state of Georgia’s extensive highways – instead BMW sent journalists to chase the fastest lap times on the Raceway Road Atlanta motorsport circuit. At that time this was more than unusual for an SAV, the press found. Their conclusion: very impressive.
“The X6 does similar lap time (8mins 30secs) to an E46 M3 round the Nurburgring. And that’s just absurd. Because going fast in straight line isn’t that hard with plenty of power. Going fast around circuit is.“
Top Gear, 2009"The new rear axle drive of the xDrive all-wheel system, which distributes the power as its needed, ensures that the BMW steams ahead like it was on train tracks."
Autozeitung, 2009“The X6 does more than go fast in straight line. Lapping the Road Atlanta racetrack during our preview drive, the car also flew around corners with awe-inspiring ease.”Car and Driver, 2009
"The driving behaviour of the BMW X5 is by no means reminiscent of that of typical SUV; rather, it behaves very similarly to powerful sedan pushing the limits, hardly understeering, precisely following the line and with no load change reactions."Auto Motor und Sport, 2011
