Thousands of dollars, hundreds of hours and tens of re-redesigns. One totally unique Ninja 250 scrambler was the result.
This whole project started out when made photoshop mock up of what Ninja 250-based scrambler would look like, and had enough people asking if it was for sale (who hadn't got as far as reading the text to see it wasn't real bike!) that it got me thinking. Having bought and sold more Ninja 250s that you can poke stick at, when the right donor bike came along just couldn't resist bringing the scrambler concept to reality.
There were couple of criteria it had to fit. First, while being damaged and cheap enough to be financially viable, the donor bike couldn't be repairable write off, as we don't deal in them. The 2010 plated 2011 model Ninja we found had panel damage and broken headlight, but hadn't sustained an impact to the front wheel or forks that could compromise the chassis an important consideration for us. As bonus, the bike had good mileage just cover 10,000km as well as its books and receipts for all its services as well.
Other criteria we had to meet was making sure it would be fully road legal, retain as much original mechanicals as possible, not use pod air filters (I hate the look of them and consider them cheating when it comes to custom built bikes) and have as much Kawasaki in it as could.
chose the tyres to based on looks being 100% honest! but even the smallest sizes the Conti TKC80s are available in weren't legally able to be fitted to the original Ninja rims, so the spoked wheels were needed as much for styling as sizing. leaned quick that changing one thing affects another which affects another... and that the devil was going to be in the detail of this build. lot of time was spent researching the bearing dimensions etc of different models before finding suitable donor front end, which would still only work with mod to the hub to drive the speedo, and some custom made spacers to match. Likewise the rear wheel.
Without going into the details of every little mod party because it would make it easy for someone else to replicate themselves, and partly because it wouldn't make exciting reading, was over the moon to locate brand new fuel tank, still in the box, from 1976. When you're going for retro 70s look, you can't get better than an authentic 70s part!
The major changes were handled by the professionals GC Motorcycles doing the wheels, Redline the exhaust and Nigel Morell the paintwork, all of which can recommend. Achieving the look wanted and doing the smaller fabrication at home myself was painstaking process, and couldn't have got the wheels right without the help of customers Seb and Orson as well cheers, mate. While few rough edges remain under the skin its the sort of project that could be refined and improved forever the end result looks great in the flesh, and once you get used to the feel of the big tyres, rides great as well.
With wide off road bars, super slim fuel tank and flat cushy seat, it really reminds me of the 1976 DT175 that was my first ever bike, without the smokey and vibey stroke engine. Its pictured in its pre-production state as I'm just so excited its finished had to get it out there and advertised!. It will be fitted with some wider indicators (just to make sure its 100% legal) set of chrome mirrors and new set of sidecovers with computer cut stickers, rather than the hand-cut ones as shown.
We're happy to back it with the same month unlimited kilometre warranty as all our bikes, and it will come with months rego as well. If you appreciate something unique then you've found it, but don't expect to be the centre of attention everywhere you go. On its few public outings I've had people walk straight past it, talking it on first glance as an old bike, rather than the one-off modern bike that it is. And that alone tells me the end result is exactly what wanted.
