Even 90 years later, Ford Model As are still popular with people. This Model Roadster is finished in Balsam Green over Black with Parchment top.
The green over black paint and associated trim are in overall good order for an older restoration with some imperfections. The windshield is in good, original order, the car’s bodywork is straight and solid and the two-tier metal bumpers remain solid.
This Model rolls on older Firestone Gum-dipped tires, size 4.40-4.50-21 at all four corners and each tire is mounted on light green factory wire wheel. The older tires are in good overall condition while the wheels are in good, original shape and present well.
Under the vee’d hood is 201 CID Flathead four-cylinder engine buttoned to three-speed sliding gear manual transmission and 3.70:1 differential. This is well-equipped unit, featuring dual, side-mounted spare tires with covers, light green wire wheels, Moto-meter atop the radiator, folding rear luggage rack and cowl lights. The car also has driver’s side taillight and windshield wiper.
Inside, the brown bench seat is in great shape. The black, four-spoke steering wheel is present and in very good order. The metal instrument panel looks very good while the inner door liners are in good, original order.
The most obvious change to the 1929 Model As, aside from brighter trim and body paint were adding exterior door handles on open models.
The Model was the first Ford to use the standard set of driver controls with conventional clutch and brake pedals, throttle, and gearshift. Previous Fords used controls that had become uncommon to drivers of other makes. The Model A’s fuel tank was situated in the cowl, between the engine compartment’s firewall and the dash panel. It had visual fuel gauge and the fuel flowed to the carburetor by gravity. rear-view mirror was optional. In cooler climates, owners could purchase an aftermarket cast iron unit to place over the exhaust manifold to provide heat to the cab. small door provided adjustment of the amount of hot air entering the cab. The Model was the first car to have safety glass in the windshield.
The Model came in wide variety of styles including a Coupe (Standard and Deluxe), the Business Coupe, Sport Coupe, Roadster Coupe (Standard and Deluxe), Convertible Cabriolet, Convertible Sedan, Phaeton (Standard and Deluxe), Tudor Sedan (Standard and Deluxe), Town Car, Fordor (two-window) (Standard and Deluxe), Fordor (three-window) (Standard and Deluxe), Victoria, Town Sedan, Station Wagon, Taxicab, Truck, and Commercial.
Documentation includes two Model Instruction Books, Model Color, Upholstery and Product Facts and Smith Jones Model Auto Parts Guide 1909-1931 and other, assorted items.
Just two of this Ford’s many competitors in 1929 included Chevrolet’s Series AC International and Plymouth’s Model U.
