OVERVIEW:
This auction is for very nice original 1952 Buick Special Deluxe Sedan with 42,000 original miles. This car was built at GM’s Kansas assembly plant and was one of 63,346 of these 41D Deluxe models built by GM.It is powered by its original 263 ci. overhead valve straight engine, and retains its original Dynaflow automatic transmission.
This car is very original, complete, unrestored and unmolested. It is very reliable and roadworthy driver with very smooth and quiet running engine, and excellent road manners with smooth ride and nice handling characteristics. It has been dry western car all its life. It was sold new by Suhr Buick of Great Falls, Montana, and came into Alberta, Canada in 1977. It has remained in the dry climate of southern Alberta since, and still retains its Montana title document.
An oil change sticker from Butte, Montana dated 1972 at 35,723 miles indicates the car has been driven just over 6,000 miles in the last 45 years.
In the care of its present owner for the last 11 years, it has been reliable occasional driver with regular maintenance and routine mechanical work performed as required.Overall the car shows light wear tear of its original miles and age, and remains very decent looking car in very good roadworthy condition.
It is absolutely solid throughout with no rust issues whatsoever.
This car could be maintained and enjoyed as the survivor that it is, with minor detailing and freshening along the way, or, it would make an excellent restoration candidate given its completeness, unmolested state, and overall solid condition. This listing provides many more details as you scroll thru. Near the end of this listing under Payment Terms you will find link to photo album of over 160 pics.DRIVETRAIN:
The original 263 ci. straight engine is rated at 120 hp. It starts easily, runs smooth and quiet, and is in good running condition with good oil pressure and no smoke.
These Buicks have unique hood which can be opened from either side, allowing good access to the engine compartment for servicing. With both sides unlatched it also makes it an easy task to remove the complete hood from the car. The latches have cable release from inside the car below the dash, and these are in smooth working condition.
The engine bay is basically quite clean, tidy, and original. All other mechanical components on and around the engine appear as original equipment and in good operating condition.
The carburetor and fuel pump were both professionally rebuilt.
The radiator and gas tank were removed and flushed by rad shop.More recent work since these pics were taken month ago included replacement of cracked manifold, and installation of new tappet cover gasket and flexible vent ducting tubes. The Dynaflow 2-speed automatic transmission shifts smoothly and new speedometer cable is evident. There are no unusual noises coming from the rear end while driving.CHASSIS:
The frame is totally solid and straight, with no evidence of collision damage or rust problems evident anywhere.
The body mounts, floor pans, inner rockers, trunk pan and drop down panels are all original and very solid. You could not hope for more solid undercarriage. Basically is just shows the road dust and dirt of its miles. All suspension, steering and brake system components are as original without modifications.
Over recent years many mechanical items have been addressed to keep the car in good roadworthy condition.
The brake system has been fully restored with new steel lines and hoses, new wheel cylinders and shoes, and the master cylinder was re-sleeved. The drums have lots of life left with only .025” of wear measured.
There is new muffler and all pipes are in very good condition.
No dents in the gas tank or spare tire well, which still has original drain plugs in place. The P225-75R15 tires are matched set of Dayton Quadra SE Diamond Back radials, with wide white walls and excellent tread remaining as they have less than 4K miles on them.
They are mounted on original rims which have been repainted original color and sport full disc wheel covers.BODY PAINT:
There is no evidence of any major collision damage or rust out on this car. Overall, the body and original sheet metal on this car are quite straight and very solid, although there are some minor dings. There is evidence of minor bump to the front bumper which resulted in dent at its center, and also caused it to hit and damage the chrome grille bar end pieces above both ends of the bumper, and slight bending of the tin pans behind the bumper ends as well. There is also scrape and small dents to the right front fender and door.A minor ding suffered at the right rear tail light has had red oxide primer applied, but that’s all. There is no evidence of body work ever having been done or filler applied anywhere.Apart from these few minor issues there are no major problems.
There is no rust swelling of the flanged lips either at the door or trunk lid bottom edges.
The car sported an exterior visor at one time, which accounts for the filled screw holes seen around the roof top antenna. The car does have assorted paint blemishes, checking, and scratches that have come from its miles and age. The worst area is shown, behind the right rear door. However, the paint retains very good shine overall.
close inspection looking for signs of repaint, such as poor masking or overspray, turned up nothing, so we believe this to be the original paint.Curbside it remains quite presentable original car, but with some minor body work to the mentioned issues, proper prep and paint, this car would be outstanding.INTERIOR:
The interior is totally original in very nice condition in all respects. The seats had sported original optional seat covers since new, which had only been removed by the current owner who wanted to appreciate and enjoy the beautiful A-1 original condition of the seats. The other upholstered items are equally in great original condition, including the door and kick panels, arm rests, all windlacing, the headliner and sun visors, front and rear rubber floor mats, and the firewall pad.
The rear package shelf shows only some slight water stains.
The pedal pads show no wear.Very nice original finish on the dash and garnish moldings.
Instrument faces are very nice, as is all the interior chrome, stainless trim, and aluminum sill plates.
The steering wheel has no cracks, nice pit free chrome on the horn ring, and very nice original emblem button.Interior options include clock, dash mounted parking brake release signal light, an original Buick script under dash tissue dispenser, day-night mirror, and passenger side visor vanity mirror. In short, this is as nice an original interior as you could hope to find in car from this period.
The windshield and all other window glass is in good condition, although there is one small chip in the windshield.
All glass felts and whiskers are good original, weather-strips still soft, pliable, and in good serviceable condition. Same for the window rubber seals.
The same nice original condition carries over into the trunk area which retains its original mat and side liners.
The car has its original jack, still in the original optional Auto-Jack case.ELECTRICAL:
Wiring on the car is original and in good serviceable condition. Cut-off switch on the modern Omni 6-volt battery.
The gauges are in really nice condition, and all in working order.
The clock is not working, likely just needs cleaning. It has cracked lens, but spare clock with good lens is included.
The radio works well, as does the heater fan. The roof mounted antenna is bent. The park light and tail light lenses are plastic and in good condition.
Back-up lamp lenses are glass and also good.BRIGHTWORK:
All external chrome and stainless trim is on the car and in overall good condition, with nothing missing.
Both bumpers and guards are in good original condition with good shine, show no rust, but do have some scratches.
The front bumper has dent dead center, but is overall straight.
The rear bumper is also straight. All the original vertical grille bars are very nice and straight, as is the main horizontal Buick Eight scripted bar. They have great shine, no damage, and only minute pitting on the horizontal bar.
The curved end bars which round the front fenders are pot metal and are both damaged.Other chrome plated pot metal items are overall in nice condition.
No pits on the hood ornament, fender Ventiports, or outer door handles.
Only couple of items like the trunk ornament and rear fender fins have very minor pits visible.
The hood and trunk plastic emblems are new, very nice. All chrome vent window frames are very nice.
Beltline and window surround stainless trim is also in very good condition.
The stainless side Sweepspears and lower rocker moldings are nice, but there is scrape on the right door sections, which could be repaired and polished out. They have no screws or holes in them.SUMMARY:
