Uruguay during 1905-1945 – TheGolden Era:Uruguay(country) (Spanish República Oriental del Uruguay), republic in east centralSouth America, second smallest country on the continent, bounded on the northby Brazil, on the east by Brazil and the Atlantic Ocean, on the south by theAtlantic Ocean and the Río de la Plata, and on the west by Argentina. TheUruguay River forms the entire western boundary. The area of Uruguay is 176,215sq km (68,037 sq mi). Montevideo is the country's capital, chief port, andeconomic center.Unlikemost South American nations, Uruguay has population that is largely ofEuropean origin, and no remaining indigenous people. They came chiefly fromSpain, Italy, France and Germany, although after World War II (1939-1945) someimmigrants arrived from eastern and central Europe. During1905-1940 administrations marked period of greatest progress. Uruguayinitiated the social welfare system codified in the Uruguayan constitution. Fromthen on, Uruguay's social programs, funded primarily by earnings of beef andwool in foreign markets, gave Uruguay the sobriquet "Switzerland of SouthAmerica."Uruguayreached the peak of it economic prosperity thanks to WWI, WWII and the KoreanWar, when it reached the highest per capita income in Latin America. Uruguayanfarmers supplied beef, wool and leather to the Allied armies. During thisgolden era mostly of the richest farmers import directly from Europe or USAvery important motorcycles such as: BMW, Zundapp, Indian, Harley-Davidson,Henderson, Norton, Triumph, Ariel, Guzzi and several other rarities.
