1948Indian Big Base Scout 45ci. Factory RacerExpertssay there were two batches of Big Base engines ever produced.  The initialbatch was run before the war in 1939 and the 648 Big Base engines appeared in1948.  In appearance, Big Base crankcases were similar to standard SportScout units.  The Indian “Big Base” Scout engine was special race-onlyengine that incorporated some secrets learned on the track and put them in playfor pre-World War II and early post War racing eras which kept Indiancompetitive against its rival, Harley Davidson.  The Scouts were ridden tomany wins by Indian Wrecking Crew riders Bobbie Hill, Bill Tuman and Ernie Beckman.Earlier, in 1948, Floyd Emde won the Daytona 200 on 648 Big Base. This verynice example has been in the same collection for well over twenty-five yearsand sports an original 648 Big Base motor with a set of original non stamped engine cases (CA blue tagged to generate title), light weight 741 frame, Splitdorfmagneto, Firestone racing tires and Flanders style handlebars. This bike willbe headliner in any motorcycle collection or would be front runner in anyvintage dirt track race, such as the popular "Race of the Gentlemen"series held at Pismo Beach CA and Wildwood NJ.
