1968 BSA SPITFIRE MkIV Special
In 1966, BSA revived the "Spitfire" name previously used for their pre-unit high performance 650 of the 1950s. The new Spitfire was produced for just three years thereafter from 1966-1968 and called the MkII, MkIII and MkIV for the respective model years. The rarest and most desirable of all is the 1968 MkIV. According to BSAOC experts, just 471 were built. The MkIV featured the new twin leading shoe brakes that were welcome addition, and necessary because the bike was FAST, reaching 120 mph in period road test. It was proclaimed by the testers as the fastest production motorcycle under 750cc.
The Spitfires featured Italian Borrani aluminum rims and Tommaselli levers. The MkIV tank and sidecovers were lightweight fiberglass. Twin 32 mm Amal concentric carbs and highly tuned engine with racing camshaft completed the package, making it BSA's flagship road racer.
The example on offer here is bike found languishing in the California desert. It has spent the last 20-30 years not running and spent some time sitting outside. did light cleaning and some assembly (rear fenders, gauges) and planned on leaving the cosmetics and doing mechanical restoration. It has very cool patina and all of the paint and surfaces are original, including the seat upholstery. Wherever it needed fasteners used correct British hardware (you'll thank me later....) recently took advantage of rare buying opportunity and unfortunately this bike has to go to make room.
The cosmetics are by no means perfect as can be seen in the photos. On the top of the tank, the original gelcoat is worn through in an area. It is cosmetic and hasn't worn through. The right sidecover is cracked, but the left sidecover is excellent. The chrome on the fenders is very nice. The front fender stays on the top are not correct. The headlight bucket is pitted and the rim is dented. The headlight ears need rechroming. There are couple of broken fins on the left side of the head as shown in the photos. The horn and ignition switch are missing. There are some new parts on the bike-footpeg rubbers, some cables, and gauge pods. The engine is stuck from sitting. The gearbox shifts through the gears. The speedo on the bike showed around 8000 miles, but it was smashed by vandals, so replaced it with correct 150 mph one. Actual mileage is unknown.
As you can see this machine has all the right rare bits on it. The wheels are Borranis, 19" in the front and 18" in the rear. Correct gauges-150 mph speedometer and 10,000 rpm tach. Tommaselli levers are complete and correct. The Amal carbs are 932. It is matching numbers bike. The VMCC library in the UK shows it is true 1968. From the librarian: "Your BSA A65 Spitfire MKIV as factory matching number and is from 1968. Engine assembly was 12th February 1968. It was despatched 13th February 1968 to B.S.A. West, USA."
Here is rare bike with super cool patina that hope the next owner will appreciate. Restore the mechanicals and you've got really nice piece. It comes with clear California title in my name. Take advantage of this opportunity because these are rarely offered for sale and virtually never seen in this condition. There is reasonable reserve on this auction.
