Here is perhaps the finest original example of 1970 BSA Firebird Scrambler 650. This is not an over-restored show bike, but 99% showroom original with mere miles on the functioning Smiths odometer. put two of those miles on it myself!
First, bit about this model. The Firebird Scrambler was developed from the earlier Hornet race bike, which became the Firebird Scrambler in 1968 when the Hornet was fitted with lights and road equipment. That model retained the fiberglass fuel tank and high-level pipes, one on each side as with the Hornet. The 1969 version was restyled with more sculptured steel tank and both pipes up on the left side with the "chip basket" heat shield. The final iteration, in 1970, was this machine, basically the same as the '69 except for the one-year-only smaller chromed-and-painted steel fuel tank, which lacked any BSA badging or decals. Unlike the other BSA A65 models, the Firebird was fitted with slightly larger section 3.50-19 front Dunlop Gold Seal K-70 tyre, versus the 3.25-19 on all other models-a detail usually missed on restored machines. These were eye-catching, high-style machines in their day and still stand out in crowd of the usual Lightnings and Bonnevilles.
The story with this example is unusual. purchased it from an estate collection in which it had been displayed for decades. According to the previous owner, prior to this it was an unsold model in dealer showroom, hence the lack of miles. Of course cannot absolutely verify this but the condition supports it.
The original factory paint and hand striping is still present and gleaming. The chrome plating is original and looks new from couple of feet away. Very slight speckling is present on the exhaust pipes and the original "Made in England" Jones rims. Speaking of original, the factory "Made in England" Dunlop Gold Seal K-70 tyres are still fitted, with almost no cracking or checking of the sidewalls. There is the expected oxidation to the alloy engine castings and made no attempt to polish this out.
All of the original fittings, including handlebars, grips, cables, correct levers with mirror holes in the perches, larger, cylinder hold-down star-nuts introduced in 1970, hardware, fasteners, etc., are present. No plastic zip ties anywhere! The hardware retains its original zinc or cadmium plating.
I had to do few things due to long-term storage deterioration. replaced the perished fork gaiters, and lined the fuel tank with 2-stage Caswell epoxy (not Kreme!) as it had developed rust inside. retained and rebuilt the original Ewerts fuel petcocks, which are quite stiff to open and close but will ease in with use. Also, put piece of aluminum tape over rusted patch on the upper muffler, as can be seen in photo here. had the tachometer rebuilt as it had become stuck from non-use, and had the speedometer lubed at the same time as well to prevent future issues. The mileage was not altered. The front footrest rubbers are splitting but did not change them.
The original Amal Concentrics are still in place and function perfectly. The bike starts first kick and idles smoothly once warmed up. Chokes are present and operate properly. See Cold Start video below. While there was oil in the bike, drained it all and replenished with fresh Castrol. There are no oil leaks. fitted new battery, and new ignition switch assembly as the original key had long since been lost. The BSA fired up on the first kick after its long slumber!
I rode it around the block couple times to test the clutch and gearbox operation, both of which are smooth and light in action. tested the electrics, all of which work properly, including the horn.
Fifty years and just five miles from its crate! This exceptional machine would, in my opinion, represent itself quite successfully in most classic motorcycle shows, as well as serve as wonderful classic rider for club events and rides. I've described it as thoroughly as possible and to the best of my knowledge, but may have overlooked things, and invite your inspection in person. It has clear California title in my name, on non-op. It has reasonable reserve considering its rarity and condition. Good luck bidding!
