1974 Harley Davidson Custom Sportster Bobber/Chopper Titled 1974 HD Sportster XLCH

For sale is 1974 Harley Davidson. purchased 1974 HD Sportster XL from an acquaintance only for the engine, back in the spring of 2008. The rest of the bike was in bad condition, front and rear motor mount(s) cracked, frame cracked, sprotor frozen etc.) and therefore parted it out. The new bike is my version of reliable daily rider. Whether be it as bar hopper or rally bike. Fast, loud and powerful. am selling it because it needs to be ridden and not just sitting around in the garage collecting dust.

It is not perfect bike with regards to appearance, but was not trying to build* show bike but something unique and built with as many OEM or made in U.S.A. parts. All original nuts, bolts, washers were replaced with U.S.A. grade steel parts. Cables, hoses also made in U.S.A. Cylinders were bored and now produce approximately 1011cc. Shifts as it should threw all gears.

Since 2012, start it every year and ride around the neighborhood. Not even 100 miles to date. Always garaged. Fluids, oil and gas, are drained before every winter. Except the cases. Battery put on trickle. Fluids added again in the spring. Brakes tight, lights work (no turn signals).

There are some small paint chips (oil tank) and small specs from crap flying up from the road. tried to detail them in the photos but please ask if you need more specific ones. The chips on the oil tank were filled with sealer to prevent any continuing flaking or oxidation. There are also two small chips on the underside of the rear fork, near the batter try. The photos also show flake chip on the gas tank tab and the air cleaner does have some very very small specs from road debris too. Small flake chip on the clutch lever and small marks where the clutch lever clamp was adjusted.

There are lot of unique parts. Custom parts, hard to find things too. It was professionally painted by Gene at Big Fatys. The frame, handlebars, battery tray and sissy bar were powder coated two times. wanted it thick and glossy.

Rockers, chain cover, gear/crankcase cover bead blasted. Heads and jugs painted silver and black respectively with high heat and rust resistant paint. The pipes are custom made by Woodward Cycles with custom baffle (welded washer post) and can be seen in the photo. The bike is loud, really loud!

Compression is good and typically starts after the first or second kick with wick of the throttle, when daily rider. However when it has sat for more than months during year my routine for cold starting is to take the air cleaner off, and clean the carb if need be. Peg (literally with wood close pin or vise grips) the choke full open, small twist gas, kick. Repeat kick until engine fires. Let it run and warm up minutes. Push in choke. Wick throttle, idle, engine off. Let it cool. Put on air cleaner. Peg the choke, and kick once or twice and wick the throttle.

The identifiable issues are couple of small oil drips as tried to show in couple of photos. Probably chain or gear cover gasket but not sure, as there is small drip on the drain plug too. It doesn’t interfere with the operation of the bike but is nuisance and should be taken care of, its up to you. The other issue is with the choke. It works but when pulled out you need to peg it as the cable pulls it back to the closed position.

*Build Disclaimer Woodward Cycles Danny Woodward (2009 January 2010), main builder, electrician and Elswick Cycles Robert Elswick (2008-2009), welding and custom parts were the individuals that finished the bike. My contributions were design, parts, grinding metal, changing gaskets, tap and die, two helping hands and assistant to the complete build. want to make sure that credit is given where credit is due. 2008 2009 Danny, top notch builder and master electrician, put the whole bike together and got it up and running.
Secondly, absolutely great welder, Robert Elswick, was shipped the frame to weld the forward control extensions, gas tank tabs (and custom channel rise), seat bungs, oil tank bracket, rear brake stay tab, fender tabs and battery tray mounts, and I’m sure there were some other special requests made but don’t recall. Great perfect welds.
The bike was completed and delivered January 2010.

Please send me any emails if you have any questions and will do my best to provide an answer. can also provide more photos upon request. Thank you for your time.

The bike is located at 98074. Buyer is responsible for shipping, crating or transportation.
