For auction here is 1949 Triumph Speed twin or 5T model. This machine comes with current V5C and is on an age related registration number, which is transferrable. The number is 374 YUT. The file comes with photocopy of an earlier log book and details of when it last changed hands etc. The log book indicates that it is only on its second owner from new. The documents also show that the engine and frame numbers are correct to the machine. The bike its self has been stood for years and was bought by the last owner in the mid 1990s with the intention of restoring it. By that point it had already been stood for some years. The last owner has not touched it, so it appears to have been stood unmolested for probably 30 years plus. It is fairly complete and fairly original with decent tin ware etc. It has an original smiths chronometric speedo, the correct dart board type fitted, as it should have. 1949 was the first year of the nacelle and the first year of the plain tank, and both of these features are present and correct, although larger inch rim has been poorly fitted. the switch and ammeter in the nacelle look right. The rear number plate and lamp look slightly earlier, but correct triumph fitments.....possibly off pre war model. The engine number has been ground back and re-stamped at some point, and have no idea why......or when. However, spare set of crankcases can be available by negotiation to the winner as have correct period set here. these are the internal oil drain type that were only around for few years.Amazingly, played about with the bike for bit....cleaned the carb and points etc, and got it to fire up. ran it for about ten minutes to warm it through and it sounded great. Good oil return, no smoke or rattles. The oil feed pipe to the head is leaking though. However, the timing appears to have slipped as all get now is bangs and pops etc and kick backs, so perhaps the timing has slipped. The fact that it ran and sounded good convinces me that this is very viable project that with little work, could be run oily rag if required. The bike has the optional rear sprung hub fitted and both wheels rims look completely original. in fact the bike has clearly never properly being restored. It is very scruffy original. The tin ware has been blown over with burgundy maroon colour at some point, so it looks sort of presentable. Its rough, but could have this something like serviceable within couple of days if set too. But, at the same time, this would make great project if you want to fully strip it down etc.All rigid triumphs are good news these days and this is great bike to restore. When they are restored, these machines look great. 1949 is year when there were changes, like the nacelle etc and the style was very attractive. This is rough diamond, and hope someone will now pick the project up and do something useful with it.No reserve. viewing welcome. 01246 411977 for an appointment. No buy it now. Collection preferred.
