One of the most famousmotor races in the world has to be the Paris-Dakar rally (now the Dakar Rally).Started in 1979 by Thierry Sabine, it originally went from Paris to Dakar in Senegal (ratherunsurprisingly) but has now relocated to South America. Since we (I don’t meanSeven Seas, but British rider Sam Sunderland) actually won the Dakar this year,what better time to get your hands on this iconic and hard to find bike.Honda produced this road legal homage bike at the start of their year winning streak at the Paris Dakar where they used the XR500R. The Dakar rally is true test of endurance both for rider and machine and when you stand next to this iconic bike you immediately get feel for the history and engineering brilliance around it. It makes you want to slap tent on the back carrier and head off for the deserts of north Africa (or the moors of North Yorkshire, at least.)This is lovely exampleof the 1982 Honda XL250R Paris Dakar. The stand out feature on this bike, otherthan the colours, is the enormous 21 litre tank. When we first got her, shelooked like she’d done couple of Dakar runs so our paint man in Japan,Ishifuji-san, worked his magic and gave her back her original good looks. She’snow ready prowl the roads and off-roads of our wonderful island. This bike has 12,117km(7,530 miles) on the clock and runs beautifully.
