For sale here is my beloved 1982 Honda XL500R. This was my dream bike when was 17 but had to wait further 30 years before got one.
This is proper original 1980's retro trail bike and is an absolute joy to ride on and off road. It's got loads of bottom end grunt and handles beautifully both round the town and on the green lanes. Then of course you get to park it up and just look at it .... and it turns heads everywhere.
Ok enough nostalgia, down to the nitty gritty. It's 1982 bike imported in 2001 from Germany. It's classed as "parallel import" so no problems with insurance and it's on an original UK "X" registration plate. It's got 36,511km (22686 miles) on the clock and runs like new.
The frame has been re-powder coated in the original red by previous owner and it's been sympathetically restored/maintained to keep it's originality. bought her last year and have since sorted the electrics, fitted new OEM exhaust system (£300 from Italy) and recently replaced the valve seals reground the valves. At the time took pictures of the piston barrel you see it's pristine inside. I've also rebuilt the carb from scratch so it runs perfectly and is ready for another 30 years. It's got brand new battery fitted last week put new set of fork seals on at the weekend.
Ok that's all the good news, now the not so good. At some point previous owner has had the tank front mudguard resprayed. It's not bad but not brilliant. The colour is slightly creamy compared to the side panels and has slight orange peel effect.
So why is she for sale ...... trust me do not want to sell her but need the space the wife is insisting have too many bikes...... perhaps should sell her instead!!
MoT expires in February but it wlll sail through. Currently on Sorn
So there you have it, proper 80's classic which only appreciate if looked after. Price is £2,850 and will consider offers but they will need to be VERY near the asking price.
