A shorter sixth-generationCorvette that was more powerful than ever before and benefited from upgrades inhandling, acceleration and braking debuted for 2005.
Major changes for 2007 include an enhanced stereo, and alarger glove compartment.
Called "the most aerodynamically efficient Corvetteever" by Chevrolet, the current coupe has 0.286 coefficient of drag.Chief engineer Dave Hill said it's also "morecompetition-influenced."
A six-speed automatic transmission that operates via paddleshifters and new three-spoke steering wheel became available on 2006 models.The transmission incorporates two electronically controlled automatic modes:Drive and Sport. Dual-stage frontal airbags incorporate passenger-sensingtechnology.
Exterior
Many familiarstyling cues highlight the latest Corvette, but the current generation is thefirst one since 1962 with fixed headlights. Xenon high-intensity-dischargeheadlights are standard. Round taillights and integrated exhaust tips appear atthe rear. center bulge on the forward-hinged hood radiates outward. taperedrear deck is claimed to improve high-speed performance.
Composite body panels sit atop hydroformed steel framewith aluminum and magnesium components. The independent suspension usestransverse leaf springs. Rather than conventional door handles, the Corvettefeatures General Motors' Keyless Access, which unlocks the doors and allows theengine to be started with key fob.
Interior
In this two-seater,the dashboard carries on the Corvette's dual-cockpit theme with two-tonesplit. The gauges use white LED technology, which makes them backlit day andnight.
A CD player with MP3 capability is standard, while the Bosesystem includes an in-dash six-CD changer and steering wheel audio controls. Thiscar is also equipped with power-operated top, GM's OnStar communicationsystem and navigation system.
Under the Hood
The 6.0-liter LS2V-8 generates 400 hp at 6,000 rpm and 400 pounds-feet of torque at 4,400 rpm.
Driving Impressions
Corvette ownersexpect energizing performance, and that's what they get in the 400-hp model. Automatic-equippedCorvettes are plenty fast. The transmission tends to upshift quickly for betterfuel economy.
