The engine kicks over with lawnmower-style rope-recoil pull starter, and is mated to the HD-branded “Scoot Away” CV transmission. The Topper is painted in Mariner Blue metallic over Arctic Blue, whichlooks great against the body panel accents and pressed steel wheels. Topperparts are at premium and not easy to source, so it would be difficult toreproduce this bike for anything close to this price.
This first years’ model features elegant chrome handlebars and dapperside-panel Topper logo. Later editions had covered stamped metal handlebarswith dark grips, rectangular Harley-Davidson logo, bulkier looking blackseats and deleted chrome accents. Those have darker, appliance-like feel whilethis earlier scooter looks lighter and more interesting with the additionalchrome. If you take look at the two rare additional lights at the rearfender, the simple explanation is that this Topper has history as ShrinerParade Scooter. Scooter has always been stored dry and clean in basement for only brought out for the parades and to regular service and maintenance. After sold on small town auction guy had it as display and use it for shows before bought it and got it restored at the cost of $ 4413.47. This scooter is rarely seen alternative to the more common vintage Vespa’sand Cushman’s. It’s hard to imagine the little and hp motors pulling afully optioned Topper, with factory sidecar or 200 lb capacity side-mounted“utility box,” windshield, and the under the handlebars fiberglass storage box.Looking perfect on the back of our dream Airstream, we’d just source anoriginal equipment chrome rear rack for our around-town parceling, and let thepeppy 9hp good times roll. For more detailed information, recommend the Harley Topper Club forum.Production is estimated at only few thousand, and the model wasshelved in 1965. With most likely only hundred or so of these thought tostill exist in running condition, museum quality restorations are being askedat five figures and barn fresh projects in the low thousands. Thanks forlooking
