This Sportster was restored to the condition it would have been in when it was sitting on the dealership floor in 1968. The detail was reproduced by comparing photos of original unrestored motorcycles, factory literature, and articles in magazines. Strict attention was given to things like the routing of control and electrical cable. The striking Jet Fire Orange paint was applied in single stage with hint of orange peel on original sheet metal. The black chassis parts were matched to the original color and baked by an industrial enamel baker. Aluminum die cast parts were polished then clear coated with semi gloss to resemble the degree of gloss when new. Aluminum media cast parts (engine cases, rocker boxes cam and sprocket covers, magneto and rear motor mount) were treated with multi step process to look original. This involved phosphoric acid, glass beading and wash with caustic solution to return these parts to grey oxide finish. Each of the sub assembly (carburetor, magneto, shocks, instruments, engine components, etc.) were treated as their own restoration. Example, the carburetor has the proper model marking and date code. The body and brass parts were tumble polished. Throughout the bike parts were polished, cad plated or parkerized. Chrome is like it was when new. The complete exhaust system and correct Goodyear tires are NOS. Drive train components (motor, transmission, clutch, brakes, etc.) were restored to new specifications.
When the bike was finished it was ridden and judged. It scored 98 ½ points. Points were taken off for minor things then corrected. Since then reproduction seat, bar and plunger was installed. With the solo seat miniscule marks show on the top of the fender.
The bike was not restored by me. It was done by what would call an expert in the history of Harley Davidson Sportsters. He is also an AMCA judge.
