Frame no. 7F20649H8
Engine no. 7F20649H8 Released in 1977, Harley’s XLCR-1000 was bold departure for firm. Designed by Willie G. it was Sportster in café-racer guise and was in production for just two years, making it quite rarity. As such, it has become one of the most interesting and collectible of modern Harleys. The short-lived XLCR (XL denoting the Sportster family, CR for Cafe Racer) comprised lightweight frame and standard 1,000cc Sportster engine. Production ceased in 1978 after less than 3000 examples had been manufactured, although handful tipped in to 1979 production. “The Harley-Davidson XLCR was Willie G. Davidson's one and only brush with the café-racer set, and it created classic for all time," noted Motorcycle Classics magazine in their retrospective on the bike. The bike offered here has been converted to 1979 Sportster specification, and verified through the XLCR owners club. With tank and bodywork from the Sportster range, but with matching frame and engine plus various ancillary parts from the donor XLCR. The odometer reads only 2,900 miles, which could be original. The bike starts easily and runs well, having just been subject to full re-commissioning. This would be straight-forward restoration back to café racer spec, or just ride and enjoy this quirky Sportster.
